Why We Don't Want Posed Photos Is One of the Biggest Misconceptions in Photography

One of the most common things I hear before a session is:

"We want candid photos. We don't want anything posed."

And every time I hear it, I realize we're probably using the same word to mean two completely different things.

Most people hear the word posed and immediately picture those formal family portraits from decades ago. Everyone is standing perfectly still. Looking directly at the camera. Smiling because they're supposed to.

If that's what you're trying to avoid, I completely understand.

The truth is, I don't want those photos either.

But here's the thing: most people don't actually want unposed photos.

What they really want are photographs that feel natural, genuine, and authentic.

Those aren't the same thing.

If I Told You to "Just Be Natural"...

Imagine you show up for your portrait session.

We arrive at a beautiful location.

The light is perfect.

Everything is ready.

And then I say:

"Okay, just be natural."

Most people would freeze within about three seconds.

Suddenly you're wondering:

  • What do I do with my hands?

  • Where should I stand?

  • Am I smiling too much?

  • Do I look awkward?

  • Should I be looking at the camera?

The reality is that most people aren't in front of a professional camera very often. Of course you don't automatically know what to do.

And that's okay.

You shouldn't have to.

What Posing Actually Means

When I talk about posing, I'm not talking about putting you into a rigid position and asking you to hold it like a mannequin.

Most of the time, posing is really just guidance.

It's helping you stand in a way that feels comfortable and flattering.

It's showing you where the light looks best.

It's helping you connect with your spouse instead of worrying about the camera.

It's giving your kids something fun to do instead of expecting them to stand perfectly still.

It's helping you relax enough to be yourself.

In other words, posing isn't about creating something fake.

It's about removing distractions so your genuine personality can shine through.

The Secret Behind Many "Candid" Photos

Here's something most people don't realize:

Many of the candid-looking photos they love started with a little direction.

I might ask a couple to walk together.

I might have a family snuggle up close and tell a silly joke.

I might encourage parents to focus on their children instead of looking at me.

The laughter that follows?

That's real.

The smile?

Real.

The connection?

Absolutely real.

The moment may have started with guidance, but the emotion is genuine.

And that's what matters most.

My Goal Isn't Perfect Poses

My goal isn't to create perfect poses.

My goal is to create an experience where you feel comfortable enough to stop thinking about the camera.

Because that's when the best photographs happen.

When you're laughing with your children.

When you're sharing a quiet moment with your spouse.

When you're focused on the people you're with instead of wondering what you look like.

The photographs become more meaningful because the experience was meaningful.

So Do You Need to Know How to Pose?

Not at all.

In fact, one of the biggest misconceptions people have is that they need to show up knowing exactly what to do.

You don't.

That's my job.

My role is to guide you, encourage you, and help you feel comfortable every step of the way.

You don't need modeling experience.

You don't need to practice in the mirror.

You don't need to worry about whether you're photogenic.

You simply need to show up ready to spend time with the people you love.

I'll take care of the rest.

Because the best portraits aren't about perfect poses.

They're about genuine connection.

And those are the moments worth preserving.
